Bench Focusing

One I notice is that I'm always asked if I know who to bench focus when I work a show not on campus. I know what nobs to move in order to change the bench focus but I'm not 100 percent sure what am doing. When Bench Focusing are you changing to get the beam angle to be in the center of the field angle? Also whats a good example what would make someone want the beam angle not to be in the center of the light?

Blocks and Soft Blocks

I have a question when it comes to using Blocks and soft Blocks on a lighting board. From my understanding you should always what your blackout cues to have a block on them, So when you make a changes to a cue before the blackout it wont carry on to the cues after the blackout. From my understanding you want to do this when there's a big transition to another look ( different world).. I've notice whenever I add a cue before the block cue it creates a soft block and I was wondering why, because every time I delete that soft block it changes the cues I create after. I've also notice whenever I update  cue only a soft block is created. I'm guessing its created to keep the change that I have made from tracking forward? If this is the case then I understand, because what I am doing is deleting the soft blocks just because I notice Stacy doing this for Rose Tattoo.

The last pass three classes have been mind blowing. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around everything that I have learned. The fact that our eye's trick us is really crazy, makes me think of other things that have nothing to deal with lights. We talked about incandescent light to LED and it is awesome how technology has changing over the years. I feel like the changes of lighting fixtures so far are great, but I do feel like we are going to get to that point where it’s going to be too much if that make sense. Do you think that we will get to that point where technology in lighting board and fixtures is going to be too much and at one point it’s going to have to start regressing? I just feel with all of this technology were going to get to the point, where their will not be a need for as many stagehands or just people in general to run a show.

Kelvin Color Temperatures

Every since Thursdays class every time I see light I try to assign a Kelvin degree to it. Before our class on Thursday, I walked home at night and took to pictures of two lights that were shinning on a tree. Now looking at these picture after Thursdays class, I see that the cooler light in the right picture is more natural to the eye, then the picture on the left. As I've learned this is because the light in the right picture temperature is closer to the sun than the one on the left. Also the fact that our eyes are more use to cool light, which has a high color temperature while warm light as a lower color temperature. I'm guessing this also relates to color gel for instance, something like a R80. Does it have a high color temperature because all the of the other colors rays are being deflected and is this why a darker color burns out faster then a lighter one?

I have a question that I actually may know the answer too, but not 100 percent sure. From my understanding there is a focus point in a lighting instrument. This focus point is inside of the instrument. I wonder is there another one outside of the instrument and is this the reason why when light shoots through the grind in the XMPL the reflection of the grid is not displayed on the floor?  Also how does this work when it comes to LED?

Yesterday I watched the Super bowl and in the beginning of the third quarter the lights went out. A statement was release saying a piece of equipment monitoring electrical load sensed the abnormality and opened a breaker, which cut power off for a moment. This is something that could happen in theatre, but I wonder in what kind of situations in theatre, can you have a light/device that is drawing to much energy and what ways would you fix the problem? In Beyonce halftime performance at the Super Bowl a lot of media screen were being used. Does media screen make it harder for a lighting designer or does it just add on to their designer or is it even part of a lighting designer design. Knowing that Beyonce performance was more of a spectacular I feel the media screens did not really affect the lighting designer, but this would be different if it was a play or musical.

I learned a lot from our plotting lecture we had together. It helped clear up something’s that I have been confused about when it comes to whole process of plotting. For example, the process that comes before it or the process that should come before it. At first I thought that the script treatment, conceptual magic sheet were a part of the plotting process, but it is not, it’s a part of an important process that comes before plotting. The plotting process is more technical and basically has to deal with Real Estate, and inventory lighting fix and angles. The most important thing I learned is that you should keep both processes separate because mixing the two can be very difficult because both deal with different parts of the brain.
